Big Week

Happy's big week just got bigger. While at my inlaws for dinner this evening Mr. Sloth discovered that Happy cut a tooth!! An hour earlier I had mentioned how odd it was to have a crawling/standing baby with no teeth, but Mr. Sloth did point out it helped with all the falls. The crazy part is, his tooth isn't anywhere near where we thought it was going to be. He's been chewing on his left side since he could hold an object and his first tooth is front, right and center. Pretty exciting, huh? He also was trying to cruise some furniture today but that's more scary than exciting.

Demand has been having a good week as well. I started a sticker/chore chart. I had been wanting to do it for a while now but Demand didn't take well to potty training with stickers so I dropped the idea. One day I just sat down at her table with her new paper and pens and drew up a chart. I decided to try my best at drawing pictures to illustrate chores instead of avoiding the chart due to my lack of artistic ability. (Somehow the artistic gene completely passed by me, everyone else in my family can draw.)

Well Demand LOVES her chart. She checks it multiple times a day to make sure she's doing everything. And (here's the best part) she's even starting to nap more because of it. She desperately wants all of the stickers she can get napping is one of her chores. Plus if she gets all of her stickers for one day she gets a special prize. The first time she did it she got a quarter for her "princess" piggy bank. She loves getting money for her piggy bank. The second time I let her have a piece of candy.

If you're wondering, her chores are make your bed, brush your teeth (morning), clear your plate (breakfast/lunch/dinner), help with laundry, brush your teeth (evening), and nap. Most are self explanatory but clearing your plate means taking your plate/silverware/glass to the counter after a meal. Helping with laundry means a number of things; helping me switch loads, taking clothes to her room, or taking dirty clothes to the laundry room. If she does at least one she gets a sticker. Napping she needs to sleep. I will give her a sticker for staying in her bed though even if she doesn't sleep but she can't watch TV. Usually she has no privileges if she doesn't nap. No snacks, no TV and early to bed.

Just a little more insight to the workings of the Sloth family these past few weeks.

Seek and Destroy

I've been MIA for about a week due to the new way of life around here. Happy has a much different approach to life than Demand did. Just as we suspected the day after learning to crawl he started pulling up on things. Now he's trying to cruise furniture.

Good grief.

He's not timid about anything and no creative re-arrangement of furniture will keep him from his objective. We remember how even after Demand learned to crawl she wouldn't enter the bathroom. Well Happy just lets himself and practically starts the bath himself. He's already tried to rewire the fireplace and ANY wire he sees becomes his first objective. (Sigh) Demand was not like this. He has another favorite item to seek and destory. Magazines. Specifically my IKEA magazine. Objective: eat magazine. I haven't been able to read it all week because of him. When he tried to grab it from me I put it on the couch, he practically laughed at me as he pulled himself up and tried to climb onto the couch using me as a step stool.

Demand is slowly becoming annoyed by him. She's learning anything in his reach is fair game and she was NOT happy when he tried to grab her Barbie. He adores her though. He's bored when she's not around and when she leaves the room he tries to follow her. It's so cute!

He's also very fond of the vacuum cleaner as many babies are. I borrowed Sidekicks Dyson the other day, it was the first time he was on the floor with the vacuum since he learned to crawl. Mr. Sloth was home and I told him, watch he's going to follow me. Sure enough starting it up didn't startle him a bit. He dropped what he was doing and followed the vacuum. Objective: crawl to vacuum, eat cord. I eventually had to put the vacuum on the porch so he would leave it alone. I'm sure Sidekick was disturbed to find his $300+ vacuum on the porch and the Sloths not home, but he was polite about it.

Consequently having two movers has made me exhausted. There are some days when I think I'd be ready to get pregnant again in a few months, but then I remember how tired I get when pregnant and I can't fathom how I could chase Happy around and function as a responsible adult. I'm barely passing now. With Demand I could just put on a TV show and she'd be fine, I could sleep on the couch until she brought me the remote to start another show, but Happy...lets not think about what he would do unsupervised.

Well it's a rare day when both kiddos are asleep and as it stands I'm sitting on the bedroom floor because Happy is asleep in our bed. He goes from waking to sitting and moving in less than a second so he can't be left alone. EVER. Good thing I have entertainment.

Six Months and Priceless

Today Happy is six months old. Crazy, huh? Want to know something crazier? He crawled OFFICIALLY for the first time today. We knew it was coming but, wow, six months???

He's been crawling in the tub for a few days and making some crawling movements on the floor but today was the day. Obscure and Sidekick were over briefly killing time before leaving on a camping trip this afternoon. You could tell that Happy was capable of doing it, he just needed the motivation. I convinced Sidekick to put his iphone on the floor to tempt Happy but just as he did Happy looked away and Sidekick wisely changed his mind about letting a six month old near his phone.

As soon as they left I put my phone on the floor and not only did Happy crawl, he dashed across the living room to get it. I mean this was an alligator like movement. Mr. Sloth knew that Happy had a surprise for him when he got home. I handed Happy over to Mr. Sloth and then set the computer on the floor. (This confused Mr. Sloth greatly) I then grabbed the video camera and told Mr. Sloth to put him on the floor. Before I could even press record he had dashed across the floor and started playing with the computer. Mr. Sloth was impressed and surprised (and that's hard to do).

In addition to crawling he also pinned his sister today which was pretty funny. She has no idea what he's going to do to her in the near future.

Here's a great Demand story for you. (Sorry future Demand this is embarrassing)

Two days ago I spontaneously decided to take the kids to the park. It was a nice day, sunny but not too hot. We were at the park for about 10 minutes when Demand declared she had to go potty and her dance indicated immediately. I had no choice. The park is secluded and no one else was there. Demand got her first outdoor lesson. In fact, so did I. I brought her behind a tree, took off her underwear and shorts and told her to squat. She surprisingly obliged and proceeded to pee down the hill. I think she thought it was fun.

Around 4:30pm I was at my "done" point with the kids so I headed outside with a blanket and the kids for some yard time and waited for Mr. Sloth to pull in the driveway. I was laying on my side resting and simultaneously playing with Happy and Demand was landscaping with her scissors. At one point I rolled over and there at the base of the hill was Demand, completely pantless, peeing on the lawn.

Laughing out loud I grabbed her clothes and swept her into the house. As I helped her dress I tried to explain that peeing in the grass was only something to be done in emergencies. I think she was so excited at the playground because she learned a way to stay dry and still have fun.

Priceless.

My Cup Overfloweth

I barely had enough sugar for my coffee this morning. I mean I was collecting bits of sugar from random places in my cupboard and pantry just to make a good cup of coffee. And as I sipped the loverly brew Mr. Sloth and I had the following conversation.

LW: God's grace is abundant, right?

MS: Yes.

LW: And endless?

MS: Yes

Good. I'm going to need that today.

So imagine yesterday, just add a sick Demand with a cold and diarrhea.

Yep. I tell you no lies.

Today I have tapped into that wonderful well of graces. As I type both children sleep. I have bathed them both at least once, steamed cleaned diarrhea out of Demands bedroom carpet, vacuumed upstairs, cleaned most of the house, ate lunch, showered AND DRIED MY HAIR. I have even taken a cat nap. I don't feel like the world is coming to an end, I haven't research putting children up for sale on Ebay and I haven't pondered as to whether or not Guardian Angels count as babysitters, and even when Mr. Sloth came home just as sick as the children instead of being my relief pitcher for an hour and informed me that in addition to him being sick our babysitter for tonight (so that we could finally celebrate our Anniversary) was also sick, I still didn't feel overwhelmed.

I can only assume it was either the fabulous cup of coffee or God's grace.

An hour from now both children will be up, I'll probably have bathed them both again and most likely one of them will be crying, and I'll be putting pizzas in the oven for dinner not getting ready to go on a long awaited date. But for now I sit in peace.

Maybe I'll lay down in peace.

Pain in the Butt

Poor Happy.

He's going to have to have surgery again. It's the other side this time. We knew this might happen but they can't operate on both sides at the same time since they go through muscle. We don't know when the surgery will be but it's at least 2-3 weeks away. Hopefully it's as easy as last time.

PLUS, the pediatric sugeon took a picture of Happy's loverly birth abnormality (which is now a bald patch on his head) and sent it to his pediatric nurologist friend who thinks we should have some images taken. I really wish we would have had that done when the MRI was done on his corresponding dimple.

(Sigh) Sorry, Buddy.

On a positive side, we paid his entire deductible for the year months ago so all this is "free". At least we can feel like the giant insurance payment we make each month is actually going somewhere. So this is the year for Happy to be sick/have injuries. Do it now or forever stay healthy!

NOTE: Skip the following paragraph if you don't want to hear the details of Happy's wounds.

We discovered his "injury" had come back on Saturday. Mr. Sloth came to me and said every time he puts Happy down he screams. I checked his diaper and sure enough he had pooped and the abscess was so big you couldn't even see his rectum. Can you imagine?? I'd scream too if I had an abscess the size of a walnut near my rectum. PLUS he came down with a pretty bad cold on Sunday (the very congested type) and he's teething pretty bad.

Yet he still finds reason to smile 90% of the time. This kid is indestructible! So now every time he goes to the bathroom I give him a bath, plus the one bath a day recommend for the rest of this week from the last surgery. Last night after a grand trip to Sam's Club, Happy screamed the whole way home. Very unusual for him. I gave him his bath and he was back to his normal self...until he bumped his head in the tub. Ugh. This kid has enough reason to cry lets not add to the problem. So after his bath I got him all ready for bed, and nursed him but he didn't sleep in fact he was energized. Grrrr.

I played with him for a half an hour to help get the energy out and then it happened.

Poop face.

Every parent knows the face their child makes as they are pooping. So there we went again. I had to give him another bath which only gave him more energy. I ended up getting him to sleep in the Moby Wrap (his favorite way to sleep these days) and then just held him on the couch until he woke up again. At 11:30am I decided it was time for both of us to go to bed. After spending four hours at the zoo in the morning and then having a 3 yr old and 5 month old NOT SLEEP all day, plus carrying Happy around most of the day (he's 19+ pounds now) I was beyond exhausted. Since he had spit up all over our sheets during the day there were no sheets on the bed. He and I just sprawled out and he nursed to sleep. I woke up to find that Mr. Sloth wasn't in the room. He came home from work around 12:30am took one look at us and set up came on the couch. I don't know if it was the lack of sheets on the bed, the two people hogging the bed or the fact that I was covered in my own milk (Attractive aren't I??) I don't blame him. In fact I envy him. He got a full nights sleep AND showered first thing this morning.

I didn't feel quite as rested as Mr. Sloth but I pushed on (and pushed the button on the coffee maker). Today was equally exhausting and equally unproductive. Happy has just napped for the first time sine the half an hour car trip to the surgeons office and it took a long walk in the very hot sun to get him asleep. Demand is back to her usual antics of not sleeping and then spending her afternoon as Miss Crabby-Disobedient pants.

Bedtime can't come soon enough, but I have little hope of actually getting any rest.
Sorry if I sound like Debbie Downer. I'm truly not having bad days, I'm just exhausted.

Ok, I should go wash something. Dishes, laundry, myself, a child's bottom, who knows what exciting adventures await me.

Hot Dog!

Yesterday...was...interesting. Our morning started earlier than expected. For example; at exactly 7am Demand was sobbing because I wasn't going to serve her a hot dog for breakfast. Please note that we usually aren't even up at 7am let alone crying about hot dogs.

Do you laugh or cry?? I mean, I haven't showered in over 24 hours and after being woken up by both children simultaneously at 6:30am, I haven't even had time to make coffee, and must I remind you that's it is not even 7am and we are crying because hot dogs are not on the menu.

The only way I was able to get Happy to sleep was to nurse him, holding him on the couch around 4pm. Well *just* as I'm getting him to sleep who comes trouncing downstairs out of her locked bedroom. She said, "I have something for you Momma", and then handed me the "childproof" lock off her door. Let's just refer to that as a road block from this point forward. I tried desperately to keep her quiet seeing as I had just gotten Happy to sleep so Demand decided to take advantage of the situation and not only make as much noise as possible, but do everything she shouldn't be doing knowing that I couldn't do anything about it holding a sleeping baby. Happy finally woke up when I heard Demand crying upstairs and feared her injured (she was not). In the one hour I was stuck on the couch with a sleeping baby Demand managed to dump all her new crayons and markers out on the floor.

Speaking of which. I heard, through my homeschooling group about a bunch of great deals in town. I bought folders and wooden rulers for $0.01 a piece. Paper for $0.10 a package, spiral notebooks for $0.20 a piece and a box of 64 count Crayola Crayons for $2, plus some new marker, $0.10 for a box pencils, a pencil box, and dry-erase markers. It was a fun trip and made me get more excited about homeschooling even though I have my doubts that my three year old will be journalism in a spiral notebook with her new pencils anytime soon. Maybe next year.

So that was yesterday. We had hot dogs for dinner, in case you were wondering.

Today was a bit rough. Happy had his check-up from surgery last week. He had a decent nap in the morning but I knew he was tired so we left early hoping to get a good nap in the car. He slept for a good hour before we had to wake him at his appointment. He slept on the way home too, but that was it. Neither of my children napped today, and can I just say that napping is a defense mechanism beautifully designed by God. If a child doesn't nap, they risk injury from themselves or from their rest depraved parents. Naptime for Demand consisted of me reprimanding her for getting out of bed, Demand peeing in her potty and on the chair in her room and then afterward peeing on the kitchen floor. (That one sent me over the edge.) Happy's afternoon consisted of him needing to be held or entertained perpetually. It was rough. After Demand peed her pants the second time I decided to give her a bath and thought with her hair being wet it would be a good time to cut her hair. So Happy whimpered in the highchair while I attempted to trim Demands hair and counted the minutes until Mr. Sloth came home.

I managed to pull myself together and spend a few enjoyable minutes with the children on the lawn in order to present a happy family life for Mr. Sloth. You wouldn't want to give him a reason to leave while he's still behind the wheel. After a very sad excuse for dinner. Our little lazy family prayed a decade of the rosary, and danced to some music before Happy finally threw in the towel. Turns out he was teething all day which explains his unusual behavior. He fell asleep in record time which is how I have time to write right now.

And with that, I'll now spend some time with my spouse. Six years ago today we were drinking rum on a secluded beach in St. Lucia. My how things have changed!

Maybe next week we'll actually go out for our anniversary...

WikiPedia

After a short discussion, Mr. Sloth and I have decided to rename Obscure and Sidekick "Wiki" and "Pedia" due to their abnormal range of knowledge.

I will now sit back and wait for the wrath.

6 years

Today is our 6th Wedding Anniversary. We had planned on going out tonight but since we didn't know how Happy's surgery was going to go we tried to go earlier. We didn't go on Wednesday as planned because Tuesday had been a bad night with Happy and everyone was exhausted. So some day soon we shall go out as planned. We intend to go to "Melting Pot", a fondue restaurant. Our friends went there for their anniversary in June and loved it. I can't wait!! While tonight seems like an ordinary Saturday it's actually been pretty nice. While getting my organizing fix on earlier today I stumbled across some old "love letters" and decided to open the infamous 'wedding trunk' which now serves as our living room coffee table. (Let's be honest, beer table.) It was a good idea indeed as it brought back some great memories and I think Mr. Sloth might have enjoyed it as well. (Very rare)

In the words of Obscure, "God smited our children" because they both napped for a long time today. What a great anniversary gift! In fact Demand is still sleeping.
We rarely exchange material gifts, but we had some quality time alone together which was fantastic. Best gift of all, actually.

Happy is doing fantastic after his surgery. A thousand times better than expected. In fact, it's the best case senario, he's better than he was before his surgery. He didn't complain once about the required fast, in fact he charmed the pants off of everyone. The surgery was very quick, and aside from a little anticipated crankiness as the anesthesia wore off, he was back to normal. The surgeon had first told me his 'wound' would look like a granade went off near his bottom, then after discovering his fistula was much deeper and much larger than expected told me it would look like a mortar went off near his bottom. So I held my breath as I opened his diaper for the first time to discover that it actually looked better than before. Can you imagine having a surgeon slice open your nether region and have it be an aesthetically improvement? And not only does the incision not bother him, but it's helped him feel better already. Whether or not you want to know this, I had long wondered if his difficulty in passing gas was related to the unfortunate location of his abscesses. Well this kid has had no problems passing gas since the surgery. AND this morning went to the bathroom all on his own which he hadn't done in weeks.
We are more than happy with how things turned out.

Demand is doing well. While I rummaged through my wedding trunk today she scored a few new toys; the veils given to me at my bachlorette party and a spare Barbie dress (there used to be a wedding day Barbie in the trunk), so she was pretty happy.

I should leave it at that before I get distracted.
